Current version of Synology Drive seems not to share the users NAS home-directory, but only a subdirectory of it.Īlso, it would be nice for the NAS side Synology Drive to be able to push the initial basic configuration to LAPTOP user when the user initializes the LAPTOP Synology Drive program. I really do not understand why Synology Drive is not willing to offer the NAS shares, home, etc to the LAPTOP user, right away and with the same terminology. I would need the NAS Synology Drive to share the full NAS storage, again with the users own privileges. The DSM can easily be provide access policies for Synology Drive LAPTOP users, as that is what the DSM does. The preparation of the Synology Drive (at server side) seems to take about 24h.Īnother issue with Synology Drive is that they use very different terminology and thinking than the DS server. I configured one Synology share of 3TB to be used in testing. Clients for for Windows/Mac/Linux-Ubuntu are also available for free.Īs I activated the DSM NAS Synology Drive package, the system started analyzing all the files in the share. Server software "Synology Drive" is free from Synology. It seems that Synology Drive could possibly do that. This leads to a good situation where LAPTOP user has access to the full NAS contents, but the local LAPTOP tiny SSD storage is used only for the directory listing and the datafiles that are worked with. Now LAPTOP has a local copy, which is then synced between NASLAPTOP upon the file changing anywhere. Now LAPTOP user has full visibility to all of the accessible files in the LAPTOPs (virtual) sync directory contents, all the few TB of filenames, but NOT all the actual data.Īs LAPTOP user now needs to access a certain file, the syncing solution will only then start data transfer from NAS to LAPTOP. I am now testing something like 'thin syncing' or "on-demand-syncing", such as those available from Onedrive and Dropbox. This is horribly bad and unusable since the laptops are not really offering a synced storage space for all of those few TB of NAS data. The problem here is that most all of the syncing solutions seem to sync only full folder structures, making the (remote) LAPTOP to hold a full copy of the NAS data. Laptops have VPN to the Synology site, to access is fine. I am also looking for a sync solution between 'NAS' Synology DS1821+ (18TB of HDD, 3TB of data) and 'LAPTOP' users. It’s paid, but supports backing up whenever an external drive is connected. Borg uses SSH for backups, and the only way to get SSH access on Synology is by being a member of the admin group, which is probably not what you want, at least not publicly exposed.Īnother great option is Arq Backup. By using docker you can limit the access to only that specific folder where the backups are stored.įor Macs and Linux boxes I prefer Borg Backup with Vorta on top for clients and borgmatic for servers. They both work well, and SyncThing is free, but I prefer Resilio ($50 lifetime license) because of its advanced features like storing data encrypted on untrusted devices. Synology Drive has both sync jobs and backup jobs, and I’m not particularly impressed with the stability of either of them.įor synchronizing, as others have pointed out, use either SyncThing or Resilio Sync in docker. What other app are available for auto uploading files/syncing in the background?ĭepends what you want to achieve. Let me get this straight, the removable drive is on the client, causing Synology drive to pause when you unplug it ? But Synology Drive really doesn't like it when an external drive is disconnected and it doesn't fail/stop gracefully or auto-resume once the drive is reconnected.
